Kruger is widely known to be one of the best game-watching destinations in the world. The park covers nearly 2 million hectares and is characterized by the combination of open grasslands, savannahs, riverine areas, mopane landscape, shrub- and woodlands and the mountains within the territory. It is home to an impressive number of species: 336 trees, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 114 reptiles, 507 birds and 145 mammal species from the famous "big five" to the lesser species as e.g. squirrel and mongoose. There are some 12.000 elephants, 5.000 rhinos (black and white), 2.500 buffalo and 1.500 lions. Other inhabitants are some more "big cats" like leopard and cheetah, and carnivores as wild dog, jackal and spotted hyaena. The park is home too to some remarkable and well know animals like giraffe, zebra, hippo, crocodile, kudu, wildebeest and well over 20 species of antelope.
